Winter is Coming… to Your PC

I’ve found that people have learned what security threats exist, and they feel that they have a grasp on it and know roughly how to be safe. The trouble is, that hackers/attackers have been honing their craft at an alarming rate over the past few years, and common knowledge of the state of the internet hasn’t come even close to catching up.

To quote John Snow without exaggeration, “Winter is Coming.”

I try to brief my clients on the threats. I don’t want to use scare tactics; I just want them to know, so that we can move on to the discussion of prevention. The trouble is, most everyone has gone most if not their whole computing lives without experiences any significant loss. Everyone has probably had a virus cleaned up, but that’s not that big of a deal.

It’s not until someone loses all of the photos of their children, or all of their company files, including Quickbooks data along with everything they’ve ever produced, that they start to REALLY listen to what I’m saying.

Last week was a tough week for some of my clients. A new client approached me with a bad hard drive containing his family’s photos… even sending it to a clean lab, no recovery. Another client was hit with an infection that wiped out all of their company data and held them ransom. Now we’re taking steps to prevent these disasters, but where was that sense of urgency before?

In honor of the data that has found that big prairie in the sky, this next series of blogs will be focused on what you need to know to survive in this day and age. Regardless of whether you own a coffee shop, or you work at one of 100 desks within your company. Everyone is directly responsible for keeping everyone else safe now. We’re all in it together!
